Happiness

What makes your people happy, what upsets them, and why it matters for growth and taxes.

Why it matters

Happy homes fill up faster and pay more tax. Very unhappy homes stop filling up and slowly lose residents. The city's average happiness sits next to its population at the top of the screen, and one Classical Age goal asks for a happy people.

What raises it

  • A higher level. Every level a home climbs makes it a little happier.
  • Beautiful things nearby. Decor such as the Garden, Marble Statue and City Park, and every wonder, cheer up the homes around them. Upgrading a building whose beauty reaches homes makes it reach further.
  • Good news. Festivals and many event choices lift spirits for a while.

What lowers it

  • Hunger, when the granaries are empty.
  • No road to the Town Center.
  • Too few jobs for everyone who wants to work.
  • Smoke. The Power Station and Factory make nearby homes less happy, so keep them away from houses. The Solar Farm powers homes without smoke.
  • Some events, for a while.
